History Major Information

The Bachelor of Arts in History is designed to provide a systematic study of the human past in order to discover meaning for people in the present. Specifically, the program provides students with the opportunity to carry out research and discuss their results in a logical and appealing manner.

Introductory Survey Courses (12 units)

  • World Civilization (6 units)
    • HIST 110A - World Civilizations to the 16th Century (3)
    • HIST 110B - World Civilizations Since the 16th Century (3)
  • U.S. History (6 units)
    • HIST 170A - United States to 1877 (3)
    • HIST 170B - United States Since 1877 (3)

AP Credit: If you receive AP credit for U.S. History, you must take HIST 170A or HIST 170B.

Replacing HIST 170 with HIST 180 or HIST 190: Either HIST 180 - Survey of American History (3) or HIST 190 - Survey of American History with Emphasis on Ethnic Minorities (3) may be taken in place of HIST 170A or HIST 170B, but HIST 180 and HIST 190 cannot replace both HIST 170 courses.

Intermediate Requirements (36 units): Catalog Year Fall 2024 and beyond

  • Historical Thinking (3 units)
    • HIST 300A - Historical Thinking (3)
  • Historical Writing (3 units)
    • HIST 300B - Historical Writing (3)
  • Upper Division History Courses by Category: (18 units)
    • A minimum of 3 units from each of six of the following categories: Africa/Mid East, Asia, Europe, Latin Am/Carib, United States, Global (18 units). Please review the CSUF Course Catalog for a complete list of qualifying courses.

A minimum 3 units must be a pre-1800 course - marked in the Course Catalog with an asterisk *

  • History in Action (6 units)
  • Historical Specialization (6 units)
    • Select 6 units of courses from World Exploration and/or History in Action not already taken.

Intermediate Requirements (30 units): Catalog Year Spring 2024 and earlier

  • Historical Thinking (3 units)
    • HIST 300A - Historical Thinking (3)
  • Historical Writing (3 units)
    • HIST 300B - Historical Writing (3)
  • Upper Division History Courses by Category: (18 units)
  • Two Upper-Division History Electives (6 units)
    • Select 6 units of upper division courses not taken.

Advanced Requirements (3 units)

  • Senior Research Seminar (3 units)
    • HIST 490T - Senior Research Seminar (3)

Declaring a Major in History

To declare history as your major for the first time, or change your major to history, you must complete the Office of Records and Registration's Change of Plan (Major/Minor Form) at the link below:
